Welcome to Second Grade!

Welcome! The new school year is here. I am looking forward to a wonderful year working with you and your child.

Math: We have started our Welcome to Second Grade unit. We are learning how to count money in different ways, use the calendar, skip count by 2s, 5s, and 10s, and how to conduct an investigation.

Reading: We are beginning our first reading unit, Sharing Stories. As we read we will be learning and practicing the strategies that "good readers" use. The children will learn and practice visualizing, making predictions, making connections, asking questions, and summarizing. The children will also learn how make thoughtful book choices that are "just right".

Writing: Through weekly writing topics and guided practice we will be working on how to develop a well written paragraph, and how to edit and revise our work to make it the best writing we can do.

Science: We are starting our first science unit The Seasonal Cycle of the Apple Tree.

Social Studies: Our first unit is Depending on Others. We will learn how we depend on others and how others depend on us.

Upcoming Events

Open House: Wednesday September 17, 2008. The open house is for parents only and will start at 5:30.

Parent Info Night for the new report cards. Please plan to attend

Just a reminder:

When a homework or behavior alert is sent home it needs to be signed and returned to school.

Homework:

 * Homework sheets are sent home each Monday.

* Students are expected to read and study their math facts each night.

* Completed reading sheets are due at the end of the week.
